About RiceWater

RiceWater exists because "2 cups water per cup of rice" is wrong for most of the rice you eat.

The 2:1 rule belongs to long-grain white rice alone. Jasmine wants less, sushi rice wants a soak and a precise ratio, risotto wants broth added in ladles, brown rice wants patience — and every variety has its own number. The database holds them, with the rinse and soak decisions that matter as much as the ratio.

Each entry is practical: ratio, rinse, soak, method, time, and the two sentences on what the rice is for.

We are cooks and educators, not a rice brand. Nothing here sells grains, and the table works offline in your browser.

What makes RiceWater different

  • Your numbers never leave your browser. Every calculator on RiceWater runs entirely on your device. We never see, store, or transmit the figures you enter — there are no accounts and no server-side processing of your inputs.
  • Published methodology. Each calculator page explains the exact formula it uses and the assumptions behind it, so you can check our work or reproduce it in a spreadsheet.
  • Free, forever, without a paywall. RiceWater is supported by advertising. There is no premium tier, no email gate, and no upsell.
